Cons: He is a little hard to approach, and seems afraid to lead discussions.
He's a new teacher, he's smart and willing to help. I don't think he's got it all figured out as far as the classroom goes, but he seemed open to trying different teaching methods, which is a sign that he's a good teacher. He definitely seems to enjoy hearing what his students have to say. However, he does read over the material that we were supposed to have read, leaving little room to discuss, but that was nice in a way because you really learn what you're reading. He's definitely an intellectual but he's down to earth too, and I think just wants to know that his students are thinking about the readings wholeheartedly (and enjoying Romantic writers a little more than other writers).
Cons: He lectures, and literally reads off a sheet of paper, so he won't see you raise your hand for a question.
The problem with this class is that, while he may be an easy grader (I don't know yet), it doesn't forgive the fact that he lectures through an English course, rarely (read: never) facilitates discussion, and answers questions like he's trying to write his dissertation aloud. Honestly, I'm an intelligent person, but listening to him talk day after day as though he were preaching the bible of English to a room full of Grad students got old so fast. I found myself sneaking off to the bathroom just to avoid listening to his dry lectures. Avoid this class at all costs.
Cons: Calls on random students to read or provide input, didn't allow Kindles, iPads, or laptops
Thought the class was going to be difficult because Dr. Marrs is so obviously intelligent, but he is a liberal grader and gives helpful feedback.
